Q3 Blockchain Security Report: $400 Million Loss, Cross-Chain Bridges and Decentralized Finance Become Hard-Hit Areas
Analysis of Global Blockchain Ecosystem Security Status in Q3 2022
In the third quarter of 2022, security incidents in the global Blockchain ecosystem were frequent, resulting in huge losses. According to statistics, there were over 37 major attack incidents, with total losses amounting to approximately 450.4 million dollars.
Compared to the previous quarter, the number of attack incidents has decreased this quarter. However, the average loss amount per incident has increased, indicating the increasing sophistication of attackers' methods.
Among all losses, cross-chain bridges and DeFi projects have become hard-hit areas, accounting for as much as 92%. This highlights the significant security risks that still exist in these two types of projects. Among them, the losses of projects on the Ethereum network are the most severe, reaching 374.28 million USD, accounting for the vast majority of total losses.
From the perspective of attack methods, 92% of the loss amount comes from contract vulnerabilities and private key leaks. This indicates that project teams still have significant room for improvement in code audits and key management. It is worth noting that approximately $204 million of the stolen funds flowed into mixing platforms, increasing the difficulty of tracking and recovering them.
It is concerning that only 40% of the attacked projects have undergone professional audits. This data highlights the widespread issue of inadequate security awareness in Blockchain projects.
Overall, the blockchain security situation in the third quarter of 2022 remains severe. Although the number of attack incidents has decreased, the losses from single attacks are more serious. Cross-chain bridges and DeFi projects continue to be the main targets for attackers, while contract vulnerabilities and private key management issues remain the biggest security risks.
To enhance the security of the entire ecosystem, project teams should pay more attention to security audits, strengthen private key management, and continuously improve code quality. At the same time, users also need to raise their security awareness and carefully choose investment projects. Only through the joint efforts of all parties can a more secure and reliable Blockchain ecosystem be built.
